I’m Overwhelmed as a First-Generation Student.

I'm Overwhelmed as a First-Generation Student.

The Pressure to Succeed

Have you felt like the pressure to succeed is a constant weight on your shoulders? You’re not alone. As a first-generation student, I didn’t anticipate the relentless pressure to secure a high-paying job right after college. Being a first-generation Mexican American woman, the eldest of three, and the daughter of immigrant parents, I feel the need to prove I can handle everything on my own. To be honest, it’s exhausting.

This pressure often translates to setting an example, breaking barriers, and justifying my parents’ sacrifices. It’s led to self-doubt, stress, and moments of feeling like I’m on the brink of failure.

Seeking Support

While every first-generation student’s experience is unique, many of us share this burden. Remember, you’re not alone. If the pressure becomes overwhelming, don’t hesitate to seek support. Reach out to campus counselors for resources and guidance.

You are strong, you are FIRST GEN, and you’re doing this for yourself. Celebrate every success, ask for help when needed, and be proud of your journey.
